A very fine Monday morning to everyone. I’m back from a week’s vacation in London and ready to get down. Here’s Joe Tex with his best-selling hit, “I Gotcha.” “I Gotcha” appeared on the L.P. of the same name in December of 1971. The single climbed to a high of #2 on the US Billboard “Hot 100” chart on May 06, 1972.

Here’s Joe Tex performing on Soul Train in 1972 with the awesomely funky dancer, Damita Jo Freeman. Get it!

  1. Oh wow! This was one of my favorite songs when I was all of 5 years old! We had the 45 (I still have it!), and I’d beg my older brother to play it. When Joe sang the line “I’ll teach you to play w/ my affection”, I had no idea what he was saying, so I made up my own words, “I’ll teach you to play with moderess fection”. LOL! Y’know, sometimes I’ll still sing it wrong, just in memory. And I never knew what Joe Tex looked like either. Soul Train was sure different in the early days. It seems like Joe didn’t really care about singing, (since he knew a record was playing), he was more interested in putting a show w/ the girl. But still, fun footage! Thanks for the memory!

  2. Great tune. Our brains just make things up to fill in the word gaps. =)
I noticed that too. Tex wasn’t overly concerned with lip-synching and taking center stage. Also, the ‘Soul Train’ cameras barely showed his face.
