“Frodo lives!”

Here’s a very cool spot for Ralph Bakshi’s animated version of J. R. R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. The film opened in November of 1978. In this commercial, we find the movie opening into wider release in February of ’79.

70s Spots: Bakshi’s ‘Lord Of The Rings’ (1979) — 2 Comments

  1. This film never achieved the status of his earlier “Wizards” which was quite the cult film. “Wizards” played all the time at The Sombrero Playhouse, a grindhouse cinema in Phoenix in the 70s. This one has seemed to have faded into obscurity.

    • When I was a kid, I felt Bakshi’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ was decent, but a bit slow. I was just happy to have a good animated version of the book to watch.

Now, ‘Wizards’ I was crazy for. Thought it was great.
