“You’ll do a double-take.”
Happy May the 4th! Here’s a batch of vintage advertisements from the prehistoric 1970-1971 era for you to sink your eyeballs into.
First up, enjoy a nice bottle of Diet Pepsi (with Charles Napier). Then, kick back for commercials featuring Charmin (with Kathleen Freeman), G.I. Joe, and Glade air freshener.
As mentioned in years past on the site, I was a huge G.I. Joe fan and the Secret of the Mummy’s Tomb set was highly desirable. I also vaguely remember the animated Glade spots with the elves (gnomes?). Although I was very small, anything animated was of great interest.
DIET PEPSI COMMERCIAL (1970)
Diet Pepsi-Cola soft drink commercial featuring a golf course and a ‘double-take’ theme. The male actor is Charles Napier. Spot aired August 1970.
CHARMIN: MR. WHIPPLE & KATHLEEN FREEMAN COMMERCIAL (1971)
Charmin Bathroom Tissue commercial featuring Mr. Whipple (Dick Wilson) and Mrs. Mooney (Kathleen Freeman). Actor Maree Cheatham appears at far left. Spot aired in 1971.
G.I. JOE ‘SECRET OF THE MUMMY’S TOMB’ COMMERCIAL (1971)
Hasbro G.I. Joe Adventure Team toy commercial featuring the Secret of the Mummy’s Tomb playset. Narration by Phil Tonken. Spot aired circa 1971.
GLADE AIR FRESHENER ANIMATED COMMERCIAL (EARLY 1970S)
Animated Glade Air Freshener commercial featuring the Early Spring brand and a pair of elves. Spot aired in the early 1970s.
Previously on 70s Commercials: Wrigley’s Doublemint, Playtex, Ford Explorer, Fresca (1979)
More Pepsi: 70s Spots: R2-D2 ‘Save Energy’ & ‘Have A Pepsi Day!’ (1979)
More Charmin: 70s Spots: Charmin’s Mr. Whipple, RCA, General Electric (1970-72)
More G.I. Joe: 70s Commercials: Kellogg’s, G.I. Joe, Tab Cola, Wurlitzer (1972)
More Glade: 70s Spots: Hungry Jack (Vernee Watson) & Glade (Doris Roberts) (1975)
Man, love me some GI Joes with lifelike hair! And I gotta say, the “double take” at the end of that Diet Pepsi Cola ad had me chuckling–good stuff :^)
PS. I don’t miss Glade sprays, but I do miss squeezable Charmin that cost less than a buck for 4 rolls…
Charles Napier with the Pepsi double-take. I always remember him fondly from the Austin Powers movies.
