One McReunion please! (McDonald’s commercial, 1978)
“Win a family reunion.”
Here’s our Daily 70s Spot for Saturday. A McDonald’s restaurant commercial featuring a family reunion giveaway contest in association with United Airlines. Spot aired in July of 1978.
It’s all so heartwarming and there isn’t a burger in sight. What’s going on here?
“I share the friendship and trust of all jungle animals.” (‘Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle’ title card, 1976)
“This is my domain, and I protect those who come here; for I am Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle!”
Filmation’s Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle originally aired Saturday mornings on CBS, beginning in September of 1976. 36 half-hour episodes were produced from the series debut through 1979.
“They’ll be expecting the Hail Mary pass, T. I say we punt.”
The cartoon stuck somewhat closely to author Edgar Rice Burroughs’ version of the famed character and Tarzan (voiced by Robert Ridgely) was portrayed as a well-spoken, intelligent individual. The loin-clothed hero guarded over the jungle, along with his monkey sidekick, N’kima and assorted lion, gorilla and elephant pals.
Enjoy the show’s intro below and have a happy Funshine Friday!
“It’s not nice to fool Mother Nature!” (Chiffon commercial, 1979)
“If it tastes like butter, but it’s not – it’s Chiffon.”
It’s time to spread on our Daily 70s Spot. Here’s a Chiffon margarine commercial featuring Mother Nature (portrayed by actress Dena Dietrich). Spot aired in December of 1979.
There’s no utterance of the famous “It’s not nice to fool Mother Nature” line in this ad. By the late 70s the Chiffon ad execs were probably struggling to keep this long-running series of commercials fresh. (Cue crack of lightning sound effect!)
Moments later, Bobby began his leap over the railing. Stop horsing around, young man! (‘The Brady Bunch,’ 1971)
For our first Brady Bunch Moments of 2014 we take a trip with the family to Grand Canyon, USA. Having recently escaped the clutches of an ornery Jim Backus, Mike and the gang “ooh” and “ahh” over the natural splendor of the canyon and the Colorado River.
This bucolic scene first appeared during season three of The Brady Bunch on September 24, 1971. It occurred during the middle episode of a three-part, on-the-road extravaganza. Roll it!
I’m guessing it’s been a while since you pulled the ol’ wagon into a Gulf station. (Gulf commercial, 1978)
“The stop that keeps America going.”
We’re getting close to our goal of posting a 1970s commercial every day for a year straight. Today we have a Gulf gasoline spot featuring a fun-loving soccer team and the Gulfpride “once-a-year” oil change. Keep your eyes peeled for the Woody Allen-type co-starring in this one. Spot aired in July of 1978.
Should auld Animagic be forgot… (‘Have a Happy New Year,’ ‘Rudolph’s Shiny New Year,’ 1976)
On behalf of myself and Bionic Disco, here’s wishing you a joyous and wonderful 2014!
Let’s celebrate with belting out the “Have A Happy New Year” song from Rankin/Bass’ 1976 Animagic holiday special, Rudolph’s Shiny New Year. The tune is sung primarily by Red Skelton. Music & lyrics by Johnny Marks. Arranged & conducted by Maury Laws.
