Trailer Tuesday: Dick Van Dyke in ‘Cold Turkey’

Cold Turkey 1971. 'Battle of the butt!'

Norman Lear’s Cold Turkey released to theaters in February of 1971. The film, starring Dick Van Dyke, focuses on a small Iowa town where all residents attempt to give up smoking in order to win a $25 million dollar pay-out from the Valiant Tobacco Company.

Interesting Facts: Cold Turkey was filmed in 1969 and its release was delayed until ’71 by United Artists who were worried about the film’s money-making potential.

Randy Newman provided the soundtrack, his first for a motion picture.

Co-stars include; Bob Newhart, Jean Stapleton, Tom Poston and Edward Everett Horton.

Bewitched: The final season

Elizabeth Montgomery in...Bewitched! Sexy choker circa 1971.

Bewitched ran for eight seasons on ABC from October, 1964 to April of 1972. The show was hugely successful, but by the final season was suffering in the ratings. The show was put opposite the white-hot All in the Family and ended up at #72 in viewership stakes.

I was too young to remember watching the show first-run but I caught Bewitched almost daily during the 70s in syndicated reruns. As well as being a big fan of Elizabeth Montgomery (as everyone was), I really enjoyed watching the original Darren, Dick York, and co-stars Paul Lynde (Uncle Arthur), Bernard Fox (Dr. Bombay) and Alice Ghostley (Esmeralda) do their thing. Tinkle tinkle tink!

Here are two promos for the final season featuring star, Montgomery, bringing the groovy. Nice “Ecology” patch!

70s Spots: King Vitaman breakfast cereal

King Vitaman breakfast cereal, TV spot, 1970

Quaker Oat’s King Vitaman breakfast cereal first hit the market in 1970 and featured excellent animated commercials created by Jay Ward Productions.

You’ll know Jay Ward from their brilliant work on shows such as Rocky & Bullwinkle, Dudley Do-Right and Super Chicken. The King Vitaman spot below likely dates from 1970, possibly 1971. In ’71 Quaker replaced the animated King with actor Joe Mann and began featuring his face on the cereal box and on television.
