70s Spots: ABC Promos – ‘Charlie’s Angels,’ Vegas,’ ‘Soap’ (1978)

A ‘Soap’ promo featuring actual soap bubbles!

“Late night tonight!”

Two ABC promos today. The first features Soap and Police Story and aired in August of 1978. I’m not sure how these shows ended up together as Soap was an ABC program and Police Story ran on NBC. This was after Police Story‘s original run, so maybe ABC bought some episodes to air late nights.

The second promo features Charlie’s Angels and Vegas (aka Vega$) and ran in November ’78. Keep an eye open for an appearance by Cesar Romero.

“The incredible edible egg!”

You’ll remember this happy jingle from the American Egg Board. The spot stars actor James Hampton (The Longest Yard) and was produced in 1977, aired in January of 1978.

After that, a commercial for Minute Rice from July of 1978. Eggs and rice – that’s nice! (Hey, I made a stylish new jingle!)

“Take Aim against cavities.”

Let’s get ourselves cleaned up with commercials for Aim toothpaste and Mentholatum Ointment. The Aim spot aired in July of 1977 and the Mentholatum spot aired in January of 1976.

We were a strictly a Crest family back in my youth, so I only rarely got my teeth into some minty Aim. Mentholatum, however! Whenever my sister or I had a cold our Mother would slather that aromatic ointment all over us. Yikes. That wasn’t entirely pleasant.
