70s Spots: Old Spice Shave Cream (1973) & Deodorant (Larry Csonka, 1978)

Ye Olde Timey Spices

“Mister, your ship has just come in!”

A pair of vintage Old Spice commercials for you today. First, we have a fluffy, floating ship made of Old Spice Shave Cream in a spot from October of 1973.

Second, one of my childhood heroes, Larry Csonka (Miami Dolphins) for Old Spice Deodorant. This one aired in late December 1978.

‘Great fun for the whole family!’ (Mr. Microphone, 1979)

“Hey, good lookin’! We’ll be back to pick you up later!”

Today, we take a look at some fancy Seventies technology. First up, RONCO’s Mr. Microphone! This particular spot aired in November of 1979 (and many more times in the years following). The pure cheese factor of this commercial insured it was stuck in the recesses of my mind for about a decade afterwards. I enjoyed quoting lines from it at (non) appropriate moments.

The second spot features the GTE Phone Mart and also aired in November of ’79.

Mr. Bubble, Western hero

“Take a bath with Mr. Bubble!”

Here’s a classic, animated Mr. Bubble commercial with an Old West theme from September of 1974. I was a fan of ol’ Mr. Bubble and had a few tubfuls of the stuff as a youngster.

After the bubbles, we have a spot from February ’74 for Parker Brothers’ Mille Bornes card game. According to Wikipedia, Mille Bornes means “a thousand milestones.”

“A dazzling jubilee of fun and color!”

Let’s take in a show! First, we’ll visit the Ice Capades’ “Magic”-themed extravaganza in a commercial from March 1978. Afterwards, we’ll take our seats for the touring production of A Chorus Line in November of 1979.

“It’s the new 1977 Capt. and Tennille!”

Happy 1977 Day! (Yeah, I just made that up). Here’s a pair of commercials from that double-digit year. First up, a January ABC promo for the Captain & Tennille show. Guest stars include Marilyn McCoo, Billy Davis Jr., John Byner, Muhammad Ali, and Joe Namath.

Second, an April ’77 commercial for Avon featuring a home visit from the “Avon Lady.”

‘I got this fabulous car that drives me out of my mind…’

“It’s incredible – and it’s mine!”

A pair of Ford commercials today that show off the upcoming 1975 models. In spot one, we’re offered four versions of the Mustang II, along with the Southern California lifestyle and a take on the tune “You’re Sixteen.”

In spot two, the Ford Granada drives around what I believe is Palm Springs, California. Both commercials aired in September of 1974.
