The Carpenters’ breakthrough hit, “(They Long To Be) Close To You,” appeared on their second studio LP Close To You in 1970.

The song was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, produced by Jack Daugherty, and made it to #1 in the US and Canada and #6 in the UK. Here’s the group performing on The Ed Sullivan Show on Sunday, October 18, 1970.
